Northland Communications has a long, proud history of serving the telecommunications needs of the Central New York Region.

The roots of the Northland Communications group of companies were planted in 1905 with the founding of Oneida County Telephone Company, located in Holland Patent, New York, primarily operating as a local exchange carrier serving approximately 125 square miles of rural Oneida County. The company's first venture away from traditional telephone service came in 1978 when All-Page, a tone and voice paging service, was established.

The divestiture of AT&T and the ensuing break-up of the Bell System ushered in an era of deregulation and competition within the telecommunications industry in the early 1980s. This new direction towards open competition resulted in the launching of Northland Telephone, a discount long-distance provider, in the fall of 1982.

As deregulation continued to create opportunities for regional companies, Northland Networks was formed in 1994 as a competitive access provider to supply bypass services for private network facilities. With the passing of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Northland Networks established itself as a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) and began providing local dial tone services in both Utica and Syracuse, which has been its primary focus ever since.

In November 1995, Northland acquired controlling interest in Dreamscape Online, which provided dial-up Internet access to thousands of upstate New York users. As the Internet world has evolved, Dreamscape's current focus is providing dedicated bandwidth, email and hosting services to the Central New York business community.

In June 1997, Northland Software was created in an effort to build a convergent billing software to serve the diverse needs of our telecom business with the intent to market the software product. This joint venture helps keep us close to the daily business operations and needs of the industry.

In May 2001, Northland acquired Gaffney Communications adding the Nortel product line to our bundle of products and services we offer. Nortel is a recognized world leader in the Voice and Data equipment business.

In an effort to further develop an end-to-end, single-company telecommunications solution, all business units, with the exception of Oneida County Telephone, standardized under Northland Communications from a marketing perspective in March of 2006.
